Jeffrey Richards
Producer Known for Iconic Broadway Revivals
An eight-time Tony Award winner, Jeffrey Richards is a Broadway theater and film producer whose works include The Minutes (2020), The Great Society (2019), American Son (2018), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (2012), Hair (2009), and Spring Awakening (2006). He received Tony Awards for the latter three productions. In addition, Richards has earned Tony and Drama Desk awards and nominations for the revival of plays such as Fiddler on the Roof (2015), The Bridges of Madison County (2014), The Merchant of Venice (2010), and Glengarry Glen Ross (2005).
50 Broadway shows
Richards has produced more than 50 Broadway shows, many of which have been in partnership with producer Jerry Frankel. He won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Play for his first Broadway production, The Best Man (2000). He produced his first off-Broadway production, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), in 1995. Prior to this, he spent nearly two decades working as a press agent on and off Broadway. He managed his own office and led public relations for productions such as Rex, Mummenschanz, and Deathtrap, the latter of which ran for nearly 1,800 performances.
One of four executive producers
Beyond the stage, Richards was one of four executive producers of the film American Son (2019). Adapted from the 2018 Broadway play he produced, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released on Netflix in November 2019. It was nominated for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.
Throughout his distinguished career, Jeffrey Richards has worked with acclaimed directors such as Joe Mantello, Daniel Sullivan, Kathleen Marshall, and Pam MacKinnon. Similarly, he has worked with talented playwrights, including Tracy Letts and David Mamet. He studied at Columbia Journalism School and Wesleyan University prior to pursuing his career in the theater world.
